By sending a contribution, you confirm you are an individual resident of Ontario giving your own funds, within the limits below, and not on behalf of a corporation or union.
The rules (Ontario law)
Municipal campaign donations are governed by Ontario’s Municipal Elections Act, 1996. The short version:
- $1,200 maximum from one contributor to any one candidate.MEA s.88.9(1)
- $5,000 maximum total from one contributor to candidates on the same council.MEA s.88.9(4)
- Only individuals normally resident in Ontario may contribute.MEA s.88.8(3)
- No corporate or union contributions.MEA s.88.8(4)
- Contributions over $25 cannot be made in cash.MEA s.88.8(8)
- Contributions can only be accepted during the campaign period, and a receipt is issued for every contribution for the campaign’s financial statement.MEA s.88.8(1)–(2), s.88.22(1)
Contribution receipts are not tax receipts. Municipal campaign contributions are not tax deductible.
Money is not the only way to help
